A large group of people were gathering at a campground on the outskirts of New Delhi on Monday for a day of civil engineering training.
The campground is one of several that has been built over the years to accommodate a large contingent of civil engineers who are often the target of protests and who often face harassment by the police.
The training took place at a nearby park where they would go out to perform some basic civil engineering tasks like building a trench.
“It is very important to be a civil engineer, to know the technical aspects of building roads, bridges, dams, sewerage lines, power plants, water treatment plants,” said Nirmal Kumar, a local resident.
Kumar said he hoped the training would encourage the community to join the civil engineering profession.
“They will be a very important part of the infrastructure of the country,” he said.
Kerala and Tamil Nadu are among the states in the country that have a large number of civil engineer students.
But the state of Kerala has no civil engineering department.
